Gary Hamberger, age 87 of York, passed away peacefully at home on April 22, 2024 surrounded by loved ones.

Gary was born in York, Pa on May 7, 1936. He was the son of the late Charles Hamberger and Charlotte Vaughn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Paula Hamberger, whom he was married to for over 35 years, and his brother Marlyn Hamberger.

Gary leaves behind many loved ones, including his girlfriend of 22 years Sylvia Stuckey and her three children, Pam McCain, Donna Forney, and Dan Stuckey, and his children, Gina Kruper and husband Jim, Kristi Swartz and husband Jim, Holly Farnan, Steve Hamberger and wife Joann, Scott Hamberger and wife Jesi. Gary is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gary graduated from William Penn High School and went on to join the Army, where he served in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. His time spent serving his country has been documented in the book Atomic Soldier. Gary’s last wishes were to donate his body to Sciencecare in the hopes of helping past, present, and future veterans in their healthcare journey. After his time in the Army he was hired on by UPS as a driver and would later retire in 1991 as the Regional Manager. He was also a member of the Prince Athletic Association and a lifetime member of the Viking Athletic Association.

In his free time Gary enjoyed playing golf and poker, vacationing with family and friends, watching his grandchildren play sports, watching the Dodgers, and telling stories of his past while enjoying a few cold ones. If you met Gary once or a hundred times, you know there was a story for every occasion and probably one that you would never forget. He also always loved wowing his family and onlookers with his jitterbug moves. Heaven surely gained a legend.

Gary also wished to express his gratitude to the healthcare team at the VA Hospital in Lebanon during his time spent there.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday June 8th from 1PM to 5PM in the pavilion of the Prince Athletic Association, 600 South Richland Ave. in York. The family asks that you park in the lot of the dentist office next door, or in the grass in front of the pavilion if available.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Gary’s honor online at York County Veterans Outreach.
