Peach Bottom nuclear plant safety focus of open house

After an annual assessment, Peach Bottom Township's nuclear plant was found to have operated safely last year.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is holding an open house Thursday, May 24, to discuss the plant's performance, and inspectors — including those assigned to the plant full time — will be on hand, a news release states.

According to inspection findings, the Exelon Generation-operated plant had all "green" indicators on the commission's color-coded safety system.

Green signifies a very low safety concern, with colors increasing to white, yellow and red with added risk. Any findings with more than a very low safety significance require increased oversight from the NRC.

The Peach Bottom plant will continue with normal oversight, which still involves thousands of hours of inspections each year, according to the release.

Those who want to see the annual assessment letter can find it on the NRC website as well as current performance information for both units of the plant.

The open house will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, at the Muddy Run Visitor Center, 172 Bethesda Church Road West, in Holtwood, Lancaster County.
