Heat indexes in York County are expected to reach up to 108 degrees this weekend and into early next week.

The York City Office of Emergency Management issued a warning Thursday suggesting residents without air conditioning go to malls, libraries or family and friend's houses to stay safe during the expected heat wave.

The forecast calls for highs in the upper 90s starting Saturday and lasting into early next week, according to AccuWeather. Humidity will make it feel like it's around 108 degrees outside on Sunday, AccuWeather said.

Individuals working outside are urged to take extra precautions, the release added. Others most susceptible to heat include the elderly, infants, young children and those with chronic conditions, as well as pets.

The York County Office of Emergency Management also activated a heat emergency plan involving cooling stations, according to a Thursday, June 28, county news release.
